Some time ago I decided that it was time for my garden to be productive as well as pretty and I laid aside an area of 2m x 2.7m and planned three raised beds for veg and fruit.
As I went from the planning stage to the doing stage, I found quite a difference in prices for both the timer and the topsoil. In the end I got the timber from Beasley and Fildes at 86p per metre and the topsoil from Dandy's of Chester for £78 for two tonnes including delivery. As they were both far cheaper than the other quotes I got, it definitely pays to shop around.
I found it easier to build the beds in my front room and carry them out to the garden (hence the large bruise) and within a day they were up and waiting filling.
Of course, the next day it absolutely poured down so only one bed has been filled so far.
The next job was to sort out the cold frame. This was my dad's and I found it abandoned and broken behind the shed at the bottom of the garden. Considering that my dad passed away at the end of the seventies, the frame is getting on a bit but is a very good quality. I measured it up and got the glass cut on Saturday and for a total cost of £22 the frame is now as good as new.
I'll be posting my attempts in veg and fruit growing and my neighbour has already dropped some hints that he'll be glad to help out with any surplus!
What a glorious adventure.
